アメリカ空軍の歌

１．さあ太陽高くめざして昇り、人知れぬ青空の彼方へと行こう。見よ、敵が我等に向かってきたぞ、兵士たちよ、速度をあげよ！炎を噴き上げ降下せよ、吼える悪魔を追い払え！我等は名誉に生きるか、さもなくば炎に巻かれて墜ちるかのみだ。合衆国空軍を阻むものなし！	1. [1.曲について]
　アメリカ空軍の代表的な軍歌です。

　作詞・作曲されたのは1938年。当時、アメリカの空軍は「陸軍航空隊」(Army Air Corps)と呼ばれていたので、歌詞でもそのように歌われていました(Nothing'll stop the Army Air Corps!)。

　その後同隊が、1941年の「陸軍航空軍」(the Army Air Forces)への改組を経て、1947年に「合衆国空軍」(U.S. Air Force)として独立するにおよび、歌詞も同じく改変されて今日に至ります(Nothing'll stop the U.S. Air Force! )。

　問題は1941年の「陸軍航空軍」への改組に際しての歌詞の扱いです。海外サイトを一瞥した限りでは、「Nothing'll stop the Army Air Forces!」と歌われたという記録はありません。また、「the Army Air Forces」では音節が一つ増えてたいへん歌い難くなってしまいます。従って、1947年までは従来どおり、「Nothing'll stop the Army Air Corps!」と歌われていたのではないかと推測されます。

　このように歴史の長い歌ですが、時代性を感じさせることはなく現在でもさかんに演奏されたり、歌われたりしているようです。

　なお「間奏」の部分は戦死した戦友の事を歌っているらしく、他の部分とは曲調をかえて演奏されます。これは日本の軍歌の「加藤隼戦闘隊」の4番と事情が似ているかもしれません。

[2.訳について]
　熟語が多くて結構たいへんでした。あとやや特殊な言葉の使い方も。たとえば歌詞中の「thunder」は「稲妻」を意味しますが航空機の暗喩として用いられていると考えられます。
